Description

When traditional means of publishing — the big houses and editors — aren’t interested in challenging existing narratives or lifting up new voices, designers don’t stop.

Zines communicate artistic visions and ignite change. They give historically marginalized voices an avenue and audience to reimagine narratives. They provide a place for the stories that need to be told.

Join Jennifer White-Johnson and Michele Carlson of Related Tactics for a discussion about the power of print and how zines as a medium reimagine and redesign existing narratives. They’ll share how to capture your own voice and bring your project from idea to life, including tips on everything from creation to distribution. We’ll also have time for audience Q&A, so come with questions for these accomplished and acclaimed artists and publishers.

Michele Carlson

Michele Carlson is a multidisciplinary practitioner working across the fields of art, writing, publishing, and collective practice.

She | Her | Hers

Carlson is one of three founding members of the arts collective Related Tactics, which facilitates projects at the intersection of race, art, and culture. Their projects have been supported by the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Chinese Cultural Center of San Francisco, Berkeley Art Center, Kellen Gallery (New York, NY), Augusta University, and Southern Exposure’s Alternative Exposure grant program.

Jen White-Johnson

Jen White-Johnson is a Disabled Designer, Photographer, Art Activist, and Art Educator.

She | Her | Hers

Jennifer is a disabled designer whose work explores the erasure of black disabled children in digital and literary media. The visuals she makes using photo and design are her own acts of resistance that amplify conversations with the Disability community. It ignites the continued need to develop anti-racist, anti-ableist media. This year her activist work has been featured in the New York Times, Rolling Stone, The Washington Post and she was recently selected as an honoree on the 2020 Diversability’s D-30 Disability Impact List.

Platform and Prerequisites

This event will be streamed via Zoom. In order to participate fully, attendees should plan to join on the Zoom app via their computer, tablet, or mobile device with enough bandwidth to support viewing video. In order to ensure only those who have registered for the event are able to attend — and to create space for intimate conversations — only those whose display name fully matches the name on our registration list will be admitted from the waiting room.
